The APEC 2011 USA Host Committee’s mission is to advance the US business
agenda in the Asia Pacific region by creating high quality opportunities for
private sector engagement during the US hosting of APEC 2011. The Host Committee
will design, organize and execute the US APEC CEO Summit held in Honolulu in
November; develop and participate in industry-driven events held in the United
States throughout 2011 to coincide with Ministerial Meetings; and conduct
education/outreach programs in coordination with USG and partner organizations
focusing on the economic policy community as well as small and medium sized
businesses and the general public.
The National Center for APEC (NCAPEC) is a US private, non-profit organization,
supported by member companies represented by a Board of Governors from some of
America’s leading companies. It is the nation’s only business organization
focused exclusively on APEC, home to approximately 60% of world GDP and more
than half of global trade. When the United States hosts APEC in 2011, NCAPEC
will serve as secretariat to the APEC 2011 USA Host Committee. The National
Center’s mission is to facilitate business participation in APEC by supporting
the efforts of the private sector in the APEC process.
President Obama on the
second day of the 2009 APEC Economic Leaders Meeting in Singapore.
APEC economies are the most dynamic, fastest growing in the world, and the
engine of global economic recovery. APEC is the premier vehicle for advancing US
economic and trade engagement with the Asia-Pacific region.
President
Obama addresses the CEO Summit in Yokohama, Japan
Established in 1989, the 21-member APEC forum encompasses virtually all of the
Pacific Rim, and is the only inter-governmental forum in the world with an
officially sanctioned mechanism for private sector input. Since its inception,
APEC has worked to reduce tariffs and other trade barriers across the
Asia-Pacific region, creating more efficient domestic economies and dramatically
increasing exports.

Hong Kong 26-29 October 2011
Eco Expo Asia
WHAT: “Green Tech for a
Low-carbon Economy” is the theme of this year’s Eco Expo Asia, the
region’s leading event in the thriving environmental protection industry.
WHO: Exhibitors will showcase their products under such categories as: air
quality, energy efficiency and energy, waste management and recycling,
eco-friendly products, environmental protection solutions and service, and green
building solutions and service.
Four new theme zones – e-waste management, green financing, new materials and
testing, and inspection & certification – will also be set up to meet the
rising demand in Asia in these sectors.
WHY: The Chinese mainland is poised to become the world’s largest sustainable
development and environmental protection market. In the 12th Five-Year Programme,
the mainland’s State Council mapped out seven new strategic industries, four
of which are related to environmental protection: energy-saving and
environmental protection, alternative energy, new materials, and
alternative-fuel cars.
Some of the target buyers will include: government policymakers, urban planners
and related NGOs; manufacturers, designers and engineers looking for
eco-friendly solutions to their production process and products; chain stores,
retailers and courier companies looking for eco-friendly packaging materials;
land developers looking for ecological landscape and construction designs; and
consulting engineers, architects and surveyors.
WHERE: AsiaWorld-Expo, Hong Kong
HOW: The
registration form is available to download.
Deadline for application is June 17 2011
And You Can Quote Me:
"We are exhibiting here for the first time, looking for a Hong Kong partner
to explore the mainland market. For the investment aspect, Hong Kong is the best
place to start. We found this fair useful. The quality of visitors is good, and
we have made a dozen promising contacts. This is also a platform for us to
collect market intelligence about the mainland. We will be back next year,
hopefully with our new Hong Kong partner." (Marcus Bicknell, Partner,
Technical and Marketing, RainWater Harvesting Ltd, United Kingdom, talking about
last year’s fair.)

Lani Rich, Executive Director of the Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii http://www.visitoralohasocietyofhawaii.org/
While
Hawai‘i still remains among one of the safest tourist destinations in the
world, and our police and prosecutors do a fantastic job within the scope of
available resources, we unfortunately will never prevent all crime against
visitors. We must therefore ensure that each and every traumatized visitor
receives timely assistance and experiences the true aloha spirit of our people.
VASH has demonstrated that committed and well-trained volunteers offer the most
efficient and cost-effective way of delivering that service. The citizens of
Hawai‘i are well aware of the enormous negative impact that crime is having on
our visitor industry, our state economy, and the future of our children and
grandchildren. We are not only concerned but want something done about it.
Thousands of people are willing, given the opportunity, to volunteer to reach
out to these victims with caring aloha. VASH provides them with that
opportunity. It is simply a matter of aloha, which is, after all, what most
visitors come to Hawai‘i for in the first place. We the people, our
government, and visitor industry leaders cannot afford to disappoint them.
The Visitor Aloha Society of Hawai’i is a private, 501(c)(3) Non-Profit,
Volunteer organization that is dedicated to sharing the Aloha Spirit with
Visitors. Its funding comes from the Hawai’i Tourism Authority.

Making a Splash: Ocean Park's New Expansion Plans
Paul Pei, Executive Director, Sales
and Marketing, Ocean Park Hong Kong
Hosted by the Hospitality and Tourism Committee and Sports &
Entertainment Committee
Our e-shop/online registration system is currently undergoing maintenance. In
the meantime, please click on the above button to expedite your registration.
Thank you for your understanding and sorry for any inconvenience caused.
In the midst of the lingering Asian financial crisis of the late 90’s, Ocean
Park faced a number of hurdles, which resulted in stagnating attendance and
mounting financial difficulties. With the looming arrival of formidable
competition ahead, there was even rhetoric about the potential closing of this
Hong Kong icon. With a new management team assembled in 2000, Ocean Park saw its
misfortunes of the late 90’s reverse into positive territory by 2001.
In 2004, with much improved attendance and stronger financial results, and a
high level of confidence by the public, the staff, and the government, the team
began the creation of a Master Redevelopment Plan (MRP) with a vision to turn
Ocean Park into one of the best marine-based themed parks in the world. In 2006,
the MRP became a reality and Ocean Park broke ground on a HK$5.5 billion
multi-phased project that would see its 35 rides, shows, and attractions grow to
over 70 when fully completed in 2012. There have also been subsequent plans for
hotels to complement the Park making it truly a resort destination for Hong
Kong.
Join Mr. Paul Pei as he describes this transformation of Ocean Park. Several new
areas and attractions have already been completed and launched, including the
Amazing Asian Animals, Ocean Express Funicular, Sea Life Carousel, the Ultramax
Flash, and most recently in January, Aqua City. Later this year, the Rainforest
will open, followed by Thrill Mountain, and the final phase in 2012, Polar
Adventure.
A graduate of the University of Denver in 1972 with a Bachelor of Science Degree
majoring in calculus, chemistry, and education, Mr. Paul Pei has been in the
hospitality industry throughout his professional career. Born in Hong Kong, he
emigrated with his family to Honolulu, Hawaii at the age of 8 and completed his
education in the United States. During the 28 years from 1972 to 2000, he held
senior management positions as Director of Sales and Marketing, Executive
Assistant Manager and Resident Manager with deluxe, 5-star hotel management
companies such as Westin Hotels, Shangri-La International Hotels & Resorts,
and Beaufort Hotels. Mr. Pei stepped out of the hotel industry in June 2000 to
join Ocean Park Hong Kong as Executive Director, Sales and Marketing. During
these past 10 years, Mr. Pei has been instrumental in leading the sales and
marketing efforts at Ocean Park through six record-breaking years out of the
last seven years, for annual attendance, revenues and surpluses. In addition, he
has participated in defining the HK$5.5 billion Master Redevelopment Plan of the
park, a 6-year 8-phase project, which will be fully completed in 2012. Mr. Pei
is responsible for implementing all aspects of the park’s sales and marketing
programs and leads the Park’s Corporate Social Responsibility efforts. This
involves developing the Park’s marketing and Sales strategy, and managing both
its internal and external communications programs, including promotions,
advertising and public relations.
Mr. Pei is currently a member of the Board of Directors of IAAPA, the
International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions based in Washington
D.C. and was a member of the Executive Committee for IAAPA. During the past 10
years, he was also a member of the IAAPA marketing committee for 3 years and
another 3 years as chairman of the IAAPA marketing committee.

The Private Equity Industry: Myths and Realities
K O Chia, President, Hong Kong
Venture Capital & Private Equity Association (HKVCA)
Hosted by Trade & Investment Committee Entrepreneurs Committee
What role does private equity play in the business eco-system and is it just a
financial investment instrument in the alternative asset class – or much more?
The private equity industry is perhaps one of most misunderstood industries.
People view the industry with a myriad of good or bad impressions. It is often
said that the private equity industry plays a role in fulfilling the
entrepreneurial dream of building a company. Is this true? Or is it really a
strategic pillar to accelerate the economic development of a region. It is this
multi-faceted role that the private equity industry plays that makes it unique
and the least understood. This talk attempts to give an insider glimpse of the
industry, including:

Understanding China’s Rising Star
Fifth Generation Leaders
Despite the increased focus on
discreet markets and bottom-up execution in China, the Party and the Government
still has the final say over how foreign companies operate in the China. This
makes understanding future Chinese leaders and their policy priorities critical
to the development of a successful China strategy. Understanding and engaging
the PRC’s rising stars is essential as these "Fifth Generation"
leaders will determine what your business can and cannot do in China. A
challenging prospect in the best of times, developing a clear understanding of
China’s future policy priorities is particularly difficult now given the
on-going transition from the Hu Jintao-led Fourth Generation.
On Tuesday, January 25, 2011, AmCham Shanghai is pleased to welcome Mr. W. John
Hoffmann, co-founder & principal of Exceptional Resources Group - XRG and
co-founder & founding core associate of China Dialogues Network – CDN, who
will help us understand China’s Fifth Generation leaders and what they mean
for your China business.
Mr. Hoffmann’s presentation will focus on four main topics:
1. China Multilateral Relationships
2. Characteristics of the Fifth Generation
3. Factional Politics and Policy Differences
4. Upcoming Leadership Change in 2012-13
About the Speaker:
W. John Hoffmann is a Co-Founder and Principal of the Exceptional Resources
Group (XRG), a China-based strategy and transactional consulting firm, and a
Co-Founder and Founding Core Associate of the China Dialogues Network (CDN), a
network of leading China analysts, consultants, scholars and businesspeople that
provides information and bespoke advice on China. The third generation of his
family to live and work in China, with over 30 years China-specific experience,
Mr. Hoffmann’s areas of China expertise are breakthrough/leap-frog visioning,
strategy development and venture negotiation, Party and government relations and
relationship building, project finance, mergers & acquisitions and dispute
resolution – restructuring/workouts. Mr. Hoffmann has been advising
governments, financial institutions and large multinational clients on their
China projects since 1986. Together with XRG-CDN Core Associate, Professor

Shanghai
China Wednesday May 10 2010 Expo Distinguished Speaker Series: The Honorable
Gary Locke, U.S. Secretary of Commerce
AmCham Shanghai and the U.S.-China Business Council are pleased to invite you to
a special briefing with United States Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke on
Wednesday, May 19 at the JW Marriott Hotel.
Secretary Locke will be leading a group of
24 American companies on a clean energy trade mission to advance exports of
leading U.S. technologies related to clean energy; energy efficiency; and
electric energy storage, transmission, and distribution. This is the first
cabinet-level trade mission of the Obama administration and is part of the
president's strategy to aggressively promote American companies in key markets
like China's. In March, President Obama issued an executive order creating the
National Export Initiative, which aims to double U.S. exports during the next
five years in support of 2 million American jobs.
Gary Locke was appointed as the 36th Secretary of Commerce by President Obama
and was sworn into office on March 26, 2009.
At the Department of Commerce, Secretary Locke is charged with implementing
President Obama’s ambitious agenda to turn around the economy and put people
back to work.
As the first Chinese-American to hold the position of Secretary of Commerce,
Secretary Locke has a distinctly American story. His grandfather emigrated from
China to Washington state and was initially employed as a servant, working in
exchange for English lessons. Secretary Locke’s father, also born in China,
was a small business owner who operated a grocery store where Secretary Locke
worked while attending public school in Seattle. His strong work ethic and
determination eventually took him to the highest office in the state of
Washington.
Prior to his appointment, Secretary Locke helped U.S. companies break into
international markets as a partner in the Seattle office of the international
law firm Davis Wright Tremaine LLP. There, he co-chaired the firm’s China
practice and was active in its governmental relations practice.

Hong Kong SAR - April 27, 2010 (Tue)
The
Changing Financial Landscape: Shifting from West to East
Michael Geoghegan CBE, Group Chief Executive,
HSBC Holdings plc, Chairman, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation
Limited
In October 2008, HSBC predicted a rebalancing
of the global economy towards Asia, and that the East will continue to outgrow
mature markets. Today, it maintains that the world's power base is fundamentally
changing, with patterns of wealth being driven by an emerging middle class. As a
result, the world's trade routes are shifting. Mr. Michael Geoghegan will
discuss how there may be a growing caution and skepticism about the Western
model of capital markets amongst emerging markets, and what the implications of
these profound shifts are for the mature economies.
Mr. Michael Geoghegan became Group Chief Executive of HSBC Holdings plc in 2006.
On 1 February 2010, he also became Chairman of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking
Corporation Limited. He was previously Chief Executive Officer of HSBC Bank plc,
a position he held from 1 January 2004. Mr Geoghegan has been a Director of HSBC
Holdings plc since 1 March 2004. He was appointed Chairman and a Director of
HSBC Bank Canada in February 2007 and Deputy Chairman of HSBC Bank plc in March
2006. He is also a Director of HSBC Latin America Holdings (UK) Limited since
June 2008, and of HSBC North America Holdings Inc. since August 2006. He joined
HSBC in 1973 and has spent 12 years in North and South America, eight years in
Asia, seven years in the Middle East and three years in Europe. His principal
office is now in Hong Kong. Mr Geoghegan arrived in Brazil in March 1997 to
establish the Group’s operations in the country following the creation of
Banco HSBC Bamerindus S.A. He was appointed a Group General Manager of HSBC
Holdings plc in the same year. In January 2000 he became responsible for all
HSBC businesses throughout South America and chaired the Group’s Regional
Executive Committee. In October 2000 he became President of HSBC Investment Bank
Brazil which resulted from the Group’s acquisition of CCF (now HSBC France)
and the incorporation of certain activities of HSBC Brazil. In June 2003 Mr.
Geoghegan was honored with a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in
recognition of his contribution to British business interests in Brazil.

How
Social Media Is Influencing the U.S. Mid-Term Elections - Lessons for marketers
building their own brand advocates.
Jonathan
Kopp - Global
Director of Digital Media, Ketchum Public Relations and former Social Media
Strategist for President Barack Obama's 2008 election campaign
Hosted by Communications & Marketing Committee
In November, Americans will return to the polls in what many pundits are
predicting will be one of the most hotly contested mid-term elections since
former President Clinton. What's at stake? Democrats control both chambers of
Congress, but Republicans hope to cut into their margins or regain control of
the House and Senate. Millions of voters will cast ballots for 435 House seats
and 37 of 100 Senate seats, while 37 states will elect governors. Voters also
will decide on various ballot initiatives. Turning voters out to the polls is a
major focus of both parties and social media is again playing an important role.
Mr. Jonathan Kopp, Global Director of Digital Media at Ketchum Public Relations
and the former Social Media Strategist for President Barack Obama's 2008
election campaign, will share his insights on:
· how social media tools and digital communications are influencing the
political process;
· social media’s role in building coalitions and advocates for political
brands;
· how the lessons of social media's success in the theatre of politics can help
companies hone their own social media strategies, and build advocates and
coalitions of support for their brands.
Mr. Jonathan Kopp is the lead digital communications strategist for Ketchum
worldwide. He launched and runs the Ketchum Global Digital Network and oversees
all aspects of digital and social media strategy, counsel and program
development; interactive design and development; graphical design and content;
and rich media products and services. Before Ketchum, Jonathan was a partner at
SS+K, an integrated communications agency providing strategic counsel and
integrated campaigns involving public relations, public affairs, issue advocacy,
crisis management, marketing and advertising across all traditional and digital
media. In 2007-2008, while a partner at SS+K, Jonathan was a member of the Obama
for America National Media Team, focused on online and offline communications to
engage younger voters. His other clients have included the Lance Armstrong
Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the ONE Campaign, DATA,
Pfizer, CVS/pharmacy, Goldman Sachs, the Pew Charitable Trusts, Anheuser-Busch,
Polo Ralph Lauren, Time Warner Cable, the Environmental Defense Fund, Comcast,
Warner Home Video, Liz Claiborne, the Rockefeller Foundation, Human Rights

cruise with lunch or dinner.

In addition to a reunion dinner, we are going to celebrate Father's 80th
Birthday with a concert by the alumni. We have considered many locations and
finally found an ideal one for our concert. It is the theater of the Crescent
School. The address is 2365 Bayview Avenue, North York (first light south of
Post Road, on the East side of Bayview Avenue). Click here for the map of the
School: http://www.crescentschool.org/about_location.asp This school is centrally located and
has a lot of free parking spaces. The theater is very nice - only 4 or 5 years
new. Very well designed and equipped. I'm sure we'll all enjoy our concert
there. Thanks to Peter Hui ('70) for arranging this theater for us.

does not need to line up for a long time, as well some other EU Pavilions. Some
of my client visited 5 to 8 HOT Pavilions a day it will really depends on the
day of visitors. Shanghai New Jin Jiang Tower ( 上海新锦江大酒店)
is the most close to Skyway Pullman hotel and there is no within walking
distance pick up point to/from Skyway Pullman hotel. I suggest all of you to
take the Sit in coach shuttle bus service on the first day visit to and from

stop every day at the same place and the same entrance. If you take the Expo
Express subway it will be very convenient from Pullman hotel. We can
pre-purchase Expo pass for you before you come and arrange a guide to take you
